How Does Prolotherapy Work?
Short for proliferation therapy, prolotherapy is a nonsurgical way to treat lower back pain, tendinitis, osteoarthritis and some sports injuries. These injections are made up of natural substances such as dextrose and saline, as well as anesthetics to reduce the discomfort of the procedure. At Peak Health, we offer prolotherapy to patients who wish to avoid surgeries and decrease or get off pain medications. It is designed to aid in helping reduce the disability associated with painful musculoskeletal problems. After we administer the anesthetic, we will inject the prolotherapy treatment into the affected region to encourage your body's natural healing process.
Depending on the area of the body and severity of the damaged area, a series of injections may be needed, typically about 3 to 4 weeks apart. The number of required sessions may vary from just one or two to as many as seven or eight. Medication is prescribed post-injection to soothe the mild pain that may occur. We strongly recommend that patients follow a MEAT (Movement, Exercise, Analgesia, and Treatment) routine during the recovery period.

The Benefits of Prolotherapy
Prolotherapy has been shown to provide effective treatment for tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, joint osteoarthritis, chronic neck or back pain, pelvic pain, meniscal tears and many other musculoskeletal ailments. According to the majority of physicians who practice prolotherapy, 80 to 90% of patients, including professional athletes, notice an improvement in their injury.
Modern prolotherapy has been in existence for over 75 years and has treated everyday people, professional athletes, and even a former Surgeon General of the United States, who afterwards recommended it to his colleagues. As a medical approach, prolotherapy provides a fabulous alternative for patients who wish to stay away from surgery and pain pills. It lets them avoid inconsistent and unpredictable medications and helps their body achieve long-term repair.
The end result is a healthier patient on fewer medications, which translates to lower risk of side effects and physician related complications, the ability to avoid more painful, riskier invasive procedures, and ultimately enjoy a better quality of life!
